GPS

GEL - GPS (Global Performance Showcase)
The GEL-GPS is a performance contest based on global issues or aspects of globalism which enables students to showcase their creativity, hence: GPS, Global Performance Showcase.

During the spring semester, students will work in pairs to create a performance which has a global or international theme. Students will be given five (5) options to choose from. All of these options allow for either live action performance, filmed performance, a combination of both, or even the possibility of a multi-media approach. Freshman and Sophomore students will participate.

Objective:
Students will create and give a presentation in English based on a global or international theme. Students will be encouraged to be as creative and self-expressive as possible and to be as adventurous as possible in selecting a topic. Students will also be encouraged to embrace multi-media or mixed media methods in delivering their presentations.

The five performance options are:

  1. Folktale
Re-create a folktale drawn from another culture. Live action, filmed, multimedia, animation etc. [How about a ‘future’ folktale, looking back at our present from an imagined future?]
  1. Literary
Recite or act out a scene from world literature. Recite a poem with animation accompaniment. Use props or visuals. A scene from a movie.
  1. Skit
Similar to the above but a live action performance of an original work
  1. Demonstration speech
Show us how to do or make something. Show off your talents and interests. Be detailed. Elaborate a lot on each of the steps, include your own feelings and opinions. [Try not to do something familiar to everyone else, E.g. “How to make toast”.]
  1. Infomercial Product Presentation (IPP)
The “IPP” format opens up global markets or the creation of a new product within an informative presentation format.  Students are encouraged to pick unusual products or use their imagination and creativity to design their own.

The following are suggested and will be highly regarded:
  • Genuine creativity
  • Uniqueness of topic (something not chosen by other pairs)
  • The embracing of a foreign culture, particularly one ‘far removed’ from the students’ experience
  • Research
  • A high degree of accuracy in written and spoken English use

Teachers should:
  • Encourage creativity and uniqueness
  • Encourage students to push the envelope; to do more and go further
  • Provide occasional in-class time for prep and checking and brainstorming ideas etc.
  • Help students create a quality, polished final product
  • Discourage non-global topics or those revolving around contentious issues
  • Provide examples and demonstrations of all the above categories

Regardless of the option chosen, all submissions must:
  • Be a pair effort involving both members equally (one group of three/odd-numbered student count will be allowed)
  • Revolve around a global or international topic or issue of some kind
  • Be four (4) to six (6) minutes in length
  • Be conducted entirely in spoken and written English
  • Be free of offensive language, offensive themes, or illegal or antisocial behavior,

The following will not be accepted for the final contest:
  • Contentious political or religious topics (presidents, Nth Korea etc.)
  • Korea-centric topics (E.g. Apple/Samsung, Dokdo, Korean wave etc.)
  • The inclusion of unoriginal materials such as video clips (very brief--less than 30 seconds--clips may be included if highly relevant and if they are completely in spoken and written English)

If unsure whether a topic is appropriate or not, students should ask themselves:

“Is this something I see often on Korean TV?”
“Does this topic involve a Korean company, product, singer, or celebrity?”
“Is someone else in my class doing the same topic?”

If your answer to any of the above is, “Yes”, then re-think your topic.

“Is this topic interesting enough for a six-minute presentation?”
“Does this topic involve a culture or people from a far away country?”
“Does this topic allow for a lot of creative freedom and imagination?”
“Will I need to do research to find out more about this topic?”

If your answer to some of the above questions is, “Yes”, then you are probably on the right track.

Timeline:
Preparation time will not be explicitly included in the syllabus but it is expected that some time be taken in class to help/work on the presentation. That is at the teacher’s discretion.
